DMV List

This tab shows a list of all of the available DMVs. Dragging a DMV over to the query editor gives you a basic "SELECT * FROM ..." query for that DMV.

Function Metadata

This tab displays a list of all the available DAX functions.
When you drag a function over to the query editor you get a stub showing what parameters the function requires.

Model Metadata

Tabular Analysis Services models and PowerPivot models have the ability to be queried from multi-dimensional and tabular clients. This feature displays the metadata in a Tabular format and when you drag items off the metadata pane onto the query pane you will get the tabular name format.

Office 2013 Primary Interop Assemblies

Installation Instructions

OLAP PivotTable Extensions requires Office Primary Interop Assemblies. Currently, the Office 2013 Primary Interop Assemblies Redistributable is not yet available. However, you can install the Primary Interop Assemblies for Office 2013 (also known as .NET Programmability Support) as follows:

On Windows XP, go to Start... Settings... Control Panel... Add or Remove Programs. Click on your version of Microsoft Office 2013 and click Change. Choose Add or Remove Features.

On Windows 2003, go to Start... Control Panel... Add or Remove Programs. Click on your version of Microsoft Office 2013 and click Change. Choose Add or Remove Features.

On Windows Vista or Windows 2008, go to Start... Control Panel... Classic View... Programs and Features. Right click on your version of Microsoft Office 2013 and choose Change. Choose Add or Remove Features.

On Windows 7, go to Start... Control Panel... Uninstall a program. Right click on your version of Microsoft Office 2013 and choose Change. Choose Add or Remove Features.

Make sure .NET Programmability Support is set to "Run from My Computer" as shown in the following image:

No, the query tables save just the DAX query and the connection string. This is likely to me more useful for people querying tabular servers as they can refresh the data in the table after the data on the server has been re-processed without needing to open DAX Studio.

I am a little unclear on what you are saying here - Should it say that users WITH rather than WITHOUT Dax Studio? Does ths mean I can edit a DAX Formula in my Excel and have it uload to Powerpivot? if so how

There was an issue with the way we were calling MDSCHEMA_FUNCTIONS to get the list of available functions. This has been fixed and checked in and will be part of the next release.

The connection dialog box allows the user to specify a tabular SSAS instance to connect to. DAX Studio will then query the server for the available databases and will display the metadata for the selected database.

Connect to PowerPivot

Note: The ability to connect to PowerPivot from DAX Studio is using unsupported APIs and as such the behaviour may change or stop working without notice in future releases. This functionality is provided on an "as-is" basis.

This option gives you the ability to run queries directly against a PowerPivot model and was primarily implemented as a simple way to learn DAX without necessarily needing a local tabular instance of SSAS.
